Delco Park: Day 7

Writer's picture: Camryn VCamryn V

After today, I never knew how the little details in a patch of grass could change my perspective of nature. Today’s destination for our group was Delco Park. Delco Park is within walking distance of our school, so our group headed that way in the morning. Once we arrived, we did a writing exercise led by a local author that had us use things around us to create metaphors. I ended up making 10 about various things around the park. I even read one off to the group. Afterwards, my friends and I went off to some trees to complete our small world activity. This activity opened my eyes to a new world I didn’t know about.

The small world activity had us look at a patch of grass standing up, kneeling down, and then laying on our stomachs. The point was to see the world at a different point of view and see if anything had changed. For me, things changed a lot. I was able to see all the nooks that bugs could crawl into as well as where the dead leaves and grass took refuge. I wrote about how the clover palms stood above the moss that crept along the ground. It was a great experience to see the world from a new point of view and has helped me see that living deliberately means to experience things with purpose; to experience things to the fullest. The rest of our day consisted of hanging out in hammocks and eating lunch under the shade of trees. Even though we won’t be traveling anywhere for the rest of our STEMmersion, I am still going to look for ways to live deliberately.

Below are some of the metaphors I created.

Rocks jut out at the water’s edge like a protective barrier daring people to pass.

The evergreen extends its reach out into the skies, grazing the clouds.

The clouds above are fluffy as cotton candy, for when you look up, you wish to reach out and take a piece for yourself.
