The Narrows: Day 5

Writer's picture: Camryn VCamryn V

For Day 5 it was back to The Narrows! However, this time we did not kayak. We instead explored all of what the park had to offer. From wading in a creek to coming close to hawks, today was a ton of fun. When we first got there, my group and I decided to head off to water testing in a creek. What we first thought was going to be a short trail soon turned into a long 1.25 mile hike through the woods.

Along the way, we experienced walking through tons of mud as well as got to listen to the river next to us. It was tiring, but peaceful. Once we arrived, we waded into the icy creek and water ran through my crocs. After our long walk, this felt pretty refreshing. I was able to get many cool pictures in the water of some of the tree roots. Walking back was quite the trek, but we survived. After our water testing hike, we went to the nature center that housed many birds and other creatures. There, I got to see a hawk with tons of personality as well as really cute owls.

Throughout our adventures, I was able to experience nature in yet another way. Not listening or observing, but using all of my senses to understand the world around me. I think that it is very important to use all of the senses you can when experiencing nature because it makes your experience all the richer. For example, when we were wading through the mud, I felt it squish in between my toes, saw it as the wet and dark brown blob it was, smelled the fresh rain mixed with mud, and heard the sloshing noises it produced. Obviously, I didn’t taste it- that would be a bad idea. But really feeling everything about nature helped me experience it more. Overall, using my senses allowed me to peek into another version of nature. This has really helped me know what living deliberately could be. Tomorrow is Carriage Hill Park and I can’t wait to experience more!
